A pharmacy intern is a student who works in a pharmacy to gain hands-on experience. These individuals work under the supervision of licensed pharmacists and hospital or store pharmacy managers to ensure that they are performing their job duties correctly.
Pharmacy Intern works in a medical center pharmacy environment consisting of unit dose dispensing, IV Admixtures, discharge prescriptions, computerized profiles, compounding and automated dispensing devices. The Pharmacy Intern is responsible for assisting the pharmacist staff in the provision of pharmaceutical care to the customers of Sanford by following established regulations, standards and practices (including the preparation of IV admixtures and chemotherapeutic agents). The Pharmacy Intern must possess the skills necessary for the understanding of written policies and procedures, perform various functions under the supervision of a registered pharmacist, and participate in departmental problem-solving when needed. Must demonstrate good written and verbal communication skills and be able to learn and utilize new technology as the profession of pharmacy evolves.
Follows organizational guidelines and procedures by participating in the collection, processing, documentation, and reporting of adverse events. Identifies medicinal side effects, drug-drug interactions and food-drug interactions. Communicates with patients about therapeutic responses, side effects and associated time frames to optimize drug therapy and improve therapeutic outcomes. Collaborates with other health care professionals to identify therapeutic treatments and advises providers on safe and effective use of drugs for clinical/therapeutic procedures, including benefits and side effects of alternative treatments. Participates in basic prescription-verification practices. Follows pharmaceutical guidelines, regulations and standards; adheres to safety procedures. Demonstrates experience with compounding, dispensing, and labeling of drugs.
Pharmacy Interns engage in assisting pharmacy staff in the provision of pharmaceutical care to patients of Sanford Roger Maris Cancer Center and the medical center. The intern will gain skills in medication dispensing within a medically-integrated pharmacy, preparation of specialized parenteral admixtures and chemotherapy, and oral chemotherapy management. There is also opportunity to assist with research related to quality improvement and medication safety. The Pharmacy Intern must possess the skills necessary for the understanding of written policies and procedures, perform various functions under the supervision of a registered pharmacist, and participate in departmental problem-solving when needed. Must demonstrate good written and verbal communication skills and be able to learn and utilize new technology as the profession of pharmacy evolves.
Sanford Roger Maris Cancer Center is supported by an integrated pharmacy with 10 pharmacists and 13 technicians/interns. Pharmacists provide prospective medication order review for ambulatory outpatient oncology medication orders and serve as an educational and drug information resource to medical staff, nursing, as well as patients. Pharmacists participate in clinical activities such as oral chemotherapy management and serve as additional pharmacist support for investigational drug services.
Must meet the minimum education requirements to be registered through the respective state board of pharmacy (requirements vary by state).
In North Dakota, one year of full time college or university must be completed in a pre-pharmacy program.
In Minnesota, one year must be completed in a professional pharmacy program (third year in school as the first 2 years are the pre-pharmacy courses).
Must maintain annual registration as an Undergraduate Pharmacy Intern through the respective State Board of Pharmacy.
